Good news, bad news for the Internet and VoiP

The New York Times reports that Paul Baran, died Saturday night, he was age 84. Widely unknown in Europe he was a pioneer of packet switched network, the technology that not only made the Internet so robust redundant and later was involved in the invention of packet voice technology, the root to VoIP as we know it today. He was certainly a founding father of the Internet.

James Gosling

The good news, James Gosling, the father of Java, so to speak, joined the Android team. I believe that is really good news. The core technology we are using for our browser based VoIP service, Friendcaller is Java. So it was good news in the first place when Oracle acquired SUN and put new resources into the Java project. We are Java partner and met the Java team several times and are impressed about how they drive Java to the next level of reliability and performance. I had chance to speak at JavaOne The same time it is good to see that James found a new creative home within the Android team.

We see that our Android app download have accelerated and Android’s core is Java. So good news, indeed and our congratulations to James. We hope that his work will drive the mobile freedom forward, at some point we had hope that the father of SIP, Henning Schulzrinne working with Adobe would drive Adobe’s solution toward SIP compatibility but unfortunately that did not happen. So, we are still out here alone, browser based and SIP compatible.

Now possible: FriendCaller SIP over other applications

It was the top voted topic by 50 votes in our feedback forum: SIP over other applications. Some time ago we started with the development of this significant user request and now it’s done.

sip_phoneFirst of all, what does SIP stands for?

SIP, which is the “Session Initiation Protocol,” in IP telephony a commonly used protocol.

SIP is a request-response protocol that closely resembles two other Internet protocols, HTTP and SMTP; consequently, SIP sits comfortably alongside Internet applications. Using SIP, telephony becomes another web application and integrates easily into other Internet services. SIP is a simple toolkit that service providers can use to build converged voice and multimedia services.

Due to the fact that each SIP client is different, we only specify the following parameters:

  • SIP Domain: friendcaller.com
  • SIP Proxy: proxy.friendcaller.com
  • (Standard) SIP Port: 5060 (used both for UDP and TCP)
  • Username: <your at FriendCaller.com registered email>
  • Password: <your FriendCaller password>

Don’t have a FriendCaller account, yet? Visit FriendCaller.com and start today.

Also check out our pricing and you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Every comment with a detailed “How-to” solution for setting up FriendCaller SIP over other applications gets a FriendCaller voucher code – free calling for more than 100 minutes.

YES! FriendCaller passed the 2 Million Users mark!

Promised: last post about numbers in this series ;) . This weekend we passed the 2 million-user mark. It seems to be only last week when we reached one million but it was End August.

The fact that a small start-up like our can add 1 million users in bit more than 2 months demonstrates not only the fast growth of our FriendCaller services but as well how great the interest is in Internet Telephony, especially in mobile VoIP for iPhone and Android.

Mobile VoIP is moving from niche market to mainstream and soon there will be a VoIP app on every smartphone, hopefully it will be FriendCaller. To get there, we always will put the end-user experience first and take user’s suggestions and opinions serious, so again, we want to draw your attention at our feedback forum: friendcaller.uservoice.com

We started already to implement the top-voted suggestion “SIP over other application” and the idea of a Blackberry app will find it’s way in the development plan soon.

One question left to answer, “How come you reach more than 2 million app downloads on iTunes alone a week ago and only now 2 million users?” The answer is simple, we are platform agnostic, FriendCaller users can use the same login on Android, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, browser and Java FX version and about half of our users use FriendCaller already on multiple devices.
