We at FriendCaller often get complaints from our users that our service is not working on their data service or is not connecting at all. This type of complain when reported by European users, put us in quite a concern that why it happens every so often now in Europe, where no governmental ban is in action?
On 6th March this year, Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC), submitted to the European Commission, something which might reveal the true identity of many telecom operators in Europe. The report was gathered after a response collected from over 400 operators (250 landline, and 150 mobile), and most of them justified why Voice over IP (VoIP) was blocked.
How this justification was made by telecom operators and why to them it was necessary? The preliminary findings of the report presents a fact that Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) is a typical practice adopted by telecome operators in order to block and/or throttle peer-to-peer (P2P) and VoIP traffic. BEREC also find that this approach is justified by the operators as to control spam traffic and avoid congestion; sometimes by buffering, and at times by streaming.
BEREC is currently categorizing the collected data, and validation is in progress. Soon European Union will also overview, and a final report for public consultation is expected this summer.
Looks like Internet neutrality has been violated quite efficiently without any worries by European telecom operators over the past many years. But, will it last anymore? Shall wait and we will see. Meanwhile lets see if you have experienced any connectivity or blockage problems on any of the famous VoIP services like FriendCaller, Skype, Oovoo, Nimbuzz, iCal, EvaPhone, Rebtel, etc.
