No multitasking for older iPhones

Many of you must have enjoyed the announcement at Apple’s homepage about the new upcoming iPhone OS 4.0. Where Apple uncovered many new features e.g. the function of multitasking, the users of iPhone 2G or the iPhone 3G should not celebrate too early.

Though, apple announced the OS 4.0 also for the older iPhones, but some new features will not work on the old devices e.g. the multitasking. Older iPod Touch models don’t have the ability to manage the multitasking functionality, too. Either the hardware from the old models is just too old or maybe its a marketing-strategy from Apple to sell more new devices.

But in the end: No multitasking for the iPhone 2G and 3G!

Finally VoIP gets all the love from Apple

VoIP is mentioned as the first app when Apple introduced the “100+ New User Features” that OS 4 will offer. We all have been waiting for the Apple’s new multitasking feature for a long while. iPad was supposed to support Multitasking, but finally did not. No matter what, the iPad with an upgrade to OS 4 will truly lead the market of tablets once and for all.

Is Multitasking that important? Yes it is! As apple says itself: “… you’ll be able to make a Voice over IP call while playing a game or checking email…” While VoIP has been the ultimate driver for innovation on the iPhone it was not yet acknowledged by Apple, and only until now we see how easy life is going to be with a VoIP app running in background.

Is Multitasking the next possiblity on iPhone?

multitasking iPhone OS

Multitasking Code Snippet in Springboard.js

Many iPhone users face the problem of the one and the only multitasking function. Howsoever, the iPhone is able to do multitasking, but just for the Apple owned apps (e.g. iPod, Safari, Mail…etc.). The rumors about an early release of multitasking for third-app provider are getting larger.
The upcoming release of the iPhone firmware OS 4.0  includes many lines of code with text-comments that are depending on multitasking. An example for this is the multitasking dialog box as shown in the picture above. A few iPhone app developers say that this code could be just for the selfmade apps from apple. But most hope that it is not.
Lets see, with Android’s capability to do multitasking, will Apple get in to a proper race rather than suing its competitors.
